Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
