In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
